What If We Relaxed?

What If We Relaxed?

Spring break was not created to balance the school calendar, but because the absenteeism rate, among both students and teachers, rose considerably during the months of February and March. This observation was made in 1968 and, since 1977, thanks to François Paradis, then director of the Commission Scolaire Catholique de Québec, pupils, students, school staff and some parents have enjoyed a well-deserved spring break.

The definition of ‘’break’’ is as follows: the act of pausing, resting, granting yourself a truce, a stop. Is that what we really do when we can treat ourselves to this week off? The answer is often no; it's the opposite: we overload our week to do as much as possible and make sure our children don't get bored. This approach is idealized, but in reality, we often need rest more, to just do nothing or do little, and above all not to have a fixed schedule.

The freedom to choose according to our energy level at the moment, our desires, the weather and our creativity, with no time constraints or responsibilities, is often underestimated and turns out to be one of the best breaks there is. Yes, outdoor activities are essential and enjoyable, as are getaways to places to discover or revisit, but simply BEING with ourselves and our children, spending quality time together without imposing an overly busy schedule, is, in our view, the definition of a restorative, restful and energizing break to face the daily grind of the coming weeks.

Sometimes, without warning, our overworked, stressed and even exhausted system gives out on us as soon as the holidays begin. Runny nose, sore throat, muscle fatigue, sinus congestion or even all of these symptoms overwhelm us and literally force us to rethink our schedule, however well planned and exciting it may be. Sound familiar? Rest assured, you are not the only ones.

Here are a few herbal teas made from plants that will help you get back on your feet.

E-tea : helps cleanse the body, and more specifically the blood circulatory system.

STR-J : a blend that acts as a muscle relaxant and reduces anxiety.

Fenugreek and thyme : an excellent respiratory decongestant that also has a soothing effect on the throat.

Ginger : relieves bodily tension, including menstrual cramps, aids digestion and blood circulation, and warms the whole body.

Rose hips : an excellent source of vitamin C.

Catnip and fennel : this blend tastes like black licorice. It relaxes the digestive tract, aids digestion and helps reduce fever.

Oregon grape : a great help for the liver and gallbladder. A healthy liver contributes to a strong immune system.
