It's true that darkness setting in earlier and earlier, the sun becoming scarcer, the temperature dropping, responsibilities that often increase with the kids back at school, extracurricular activities starting up again, lunches to prepare, closing up the yard before winter, and so on (I feel tired just listing all of that ????) all contribute to the fatigue we feel. However, fatigue, though temporary, should not last indefinitely. Here are some things to reflect on and some solutions to get your energy back.

First of all, sleep plays a key role in our daily energy levels. Disturbed, interrupted, insufficient, excessive or non-existent sleep keeps the body from recovering and therefore leads to a lack of energy. Even more so if this situation happens repeatedly, leading to chronic sleep deprivation. In an ideal world, a sleep cure with no alarm clock, allowing naps at any time of day and for as long as you like, would be the best way to recover as quickly as possible. However, few people can truly afford to take a sleep cure of at least two weeks. In that case, a few solutions are available to us:

  • Reduce the sources of disturbance to our sleep : turn off screens 30 minutes to 1 hour before bedtime, stop eating at least 2 hours before going to bed, sleep in total darkness, put phones on vibrate and, last but not least, clear our minds by writing down everything that is on our mind: the next day's tasks, the day's setbacks, frustrations and ….. the wins, the things we're grateful for, the positive moments, etc.

  • Prepare for sleep : have a calming herbal tea (chamomile, valerian or Nature's Sunshine's STR-J blend, which is wonderful), take a walk 1 hour before bedtime or do a relaxing activity such as yoga, meditate, practise cardiac coherence or another relaxing breathing technique, or read a relaxing book (personally, I find it's the best sleeping pill there is).

  • Use herbal supplements to calm the nervous system and help the body fall into the arms of Morpheus more easily: widely available on the market, melatonin is the hormone associated with sleep. Keep in mind that melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, located in the brain. To produce melatonin, the pineal gland needs sunlight entering through the retina of the eye. It is therefore recommended not to wear sunglasses systematically when we go outside. In addition, other companies offer herbal blends that are melatonin precursors. Many options are available on the market.

Next, it is important to consume stimulants such as coffee, tea and energy drinks in moderation. This may seem paradoxical when these drinks do give us an energy boost, at least a short-lived one. However, the more we use these stimulants to make up for our lack of energy, the more we run our batteries down. Let me explain: stimulants actually draw on our energy reserves, the ones stored for serious emergencies, which are managed by our adrenal glands. "Overdoing" these so-called energy drinks therefore helps wear us out even more ???? and wears down our nervous system. The more tense this system is, the less well we sleep and... the less well we sleep, the more tired we feel. In addition, alcohol, despite the numbing effect it provides, greatly affects the nervous system. And, as written above, the more exhausted this system is, the less restorative our sleep. In short, moderation is always the best choice.

Finally, paradoxically, exercise done in too great a quantity and at high intensity can lead to fatigue and difficulty recovering. Exercise is good, but too much is not as good. Here again, balance is key.

To give ourselves a little boost, there are several supplements that help speed up metabolism and increase energy (see the list above).

Happy fall ????
