How to enjoy the sun to the max, safely?☀️

How to enjoy the sun to the max, safely?☀️

Did you know that sun exposure is vital for our health and well-being?

Indeed, UVB rays produce vitamin D in our body, which helps regulate blood pressure, strengthen our bones and even prevent depression. Getting some fresh air, walking in nature and enjoying the comforting sun are among the only safe and permitted activities in these unusual times.Although the sun is essential to life, it can quickly become dangerous and damaging to the health of the skin. It is well known that the sun is directly linked to skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in Canada.

There are 2 types of radiation that are dangerous for the skin: UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are the ones responsible for redness, sunburns and skin cancers. UVA rays, for their part, are more associated with wrinkles, premature aging and irreversible DNA damage. Using sun protection reduces not only your chances of developing skin cancer, but also of worsening or causing a skin problem. It allows you to keep young-looking, healthy skin.

Are you using your sun protection properly?

To be effective, all SPF products must be applied about every two hours, after swimming or water activities, or if you sweat. They must also be applied every day, all year round, whether the weather is nice or not. Indeed, the belief that we only need to wear sun protection in summer is false. Appearances can be deceiving! Clouds do not filter out all U.V. rays and can sometimes even intensify them, thus increasing their strength. What’s more, snow can reflect up to 80% of the rays.

How do you choose the right sun protection?

Choose a mineral sunscreen: it reflects U.V. rays, unlike chemical protection, which absorbs them. It also gives you immediate protection from the sun and won’t sting your eyes if it happens to run. Choose a broad-spectrum product that protects against both UVA and UVB. You’ll also have several textures to choose from (spray, cream, powder); it’s up to you to find the formula that suits you best with the help of your skin specialist. As for the sun protection factor, did you know that protection practically reaches a plateau after SPF 15, increasing by only a small percentage? An SPF 15 blocks up to 93% of rays, compared with 97% for an SPF and 98% for an SPF 50. Contrary to what you might think, you don’t need a very high sun protection factor (over 50).

It is recommended to avoid, or at least reduce, your sun exposure in the middle of the day, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when UV radiation is at its strongest. Also favour shaded areas and protective clothing.

You are now ready to choose the right sun protection and enjoy your summer safely!
